Stair nosings protect the front edge of treads on a staircase and help prevent damage and excessive wear of the stair floorcovering. They are also an elegant decorative feature. Depending on the design and style chosen, they can likewise highlight a step edge and in so doing improve the safety for those using the staircase.

Typically, steps either have an overhang, which allows more space for foot placement when climbing or descending a staircase, or the step edge is a straight angle with no overhang.
