The most popular type of door threshold bars are Carpet to Carpet which will join two carpets, laminate flooring threshold strips and carpet door plates. But if you have hard flooring such as carpet to tile trim or carpet to laminate flooring then you may like the Self Adhesive door thresholds.

What does a door threshold actually do?

Door bars, door threshold strips and cover plates join two flooring surfaces, creating a smart and secure joint. They will not only cover up the raw edges of the floor-coverings but protect them from undue wear and tear. For example, without a carpet threshold, the edge of a carpet would easily fray, similarly the cut edge of a ceramic tile could look unsightly and be sharp. In both situations an exposed edge could also become a trip hazard. When working with a floating wooden floor the door thresholds neatly cover the expansion gap, creating a professional-looking and attractive join. There are many different designs from a Z bar carpet or carpet to tile trim to a laminate flooring threshold strip or ramp. How do you fit them?

Flooring joints are used in a variety of locations in the home and commercial buildings. The most popular place is in a doorway, where two floor coverings meet, such as a carpet joining with another piece of carpet or a ceramic tile butting up to vinyl, laminate or carpet. They are also fitted across the complete width of a room where two floor coverings join up. Likewise, they make a smart edge to flooring along a full-drop windows or balustrade. To fit them, follow the manufacturer’s instructions. The first job is to cut them to length using a sharp hack-saw. A threshold plate, such as the Posh, simply covers the two flooring edges and is typically held securely by screwing into the gap between the two floor coverings. A carpet joining strip, such as the Premier Double Z9, will include base sections either side featuring sharp pins. These fit under the carpet and hold it under tension; this style can normally be nailed or glued to your base floor. We also offer a great range of self-adhesive door thresholds, which stick securely to a hard flooring such as wood or ceramic. Fitting these is a straightforward job – the key is to ensure your work surfaces are perfectly clean and your floor levels even with each other.

What are door bars made from?

Only quality brands are designed to withstand heavy and frequent use, including the weight of a people walking on them, outdoor footwear, vacuum cleaners, pets’ claws and toys. We offer a choice of high quality ranges: Premier and Feline. Both are made from solid brass; they do not buckle, bend or dent with normal daily use in the home and maintain a smart appearance, whatever the finish option you select. Standard door threshold strips sold on the high street and in sheds are typically made of wood or a low grade aluminium and these can quickly dent, scuff and bend.

How do you replace a door bar?

You can ask a qualified carpet or flooring fitter or, for the more practical person, you can DIY fit them. You can fit them at the same time as installing a new floorcovering but also retrospectively. It is important to first note the types of flooring you wish to join e.g. carpet or hard flooring such as porcelain, wood, laminate, concrete. Then, determine whether your two floorcoverings are level with each other or if there is a height difference and if you have underfloor heating pipes or cabling running nearby. Armed with this information, you can select designs compatible with your situation. A typical scenario is where a new bathroom tiled floor has been installed with underfloor heating, which has resulted in the bathroom floor level ending up higher than the connecting carpeted landing. In this instance, a new door carpet to tile trim is required which will cater for the level difference – the Compression Ramp and/or the Easy carpet shims used in conjunction with the Z bar are excellent solutions. Alternatively, if the height difference is small, we recommend the Posh or Premier Cover plate.

Style choice

They vary in design but will always include a visible bar, which securely finishes the edge of the flooring, whatever its type. Some feature visible screws as a design feature whilst others are a solid bar. Carpet thresholds will include metal wings or base sections fitted with pins either side – these are hidden under the carpet and allow the carpet to be held under tension and ruck-free around the join.
